Introduces current practices of teaching reading in the elementary school. Familiarizes students with materials currently in use, emphasizes observation of various reading techniques and trends in the classroom.

Presents techniques and methods for encouraging the development of language and perceptual skills in young children. Stresses improvement of vocabulary, speech and methods to stimulate discussion. Surveys children's literature, examines elements of quality story telling and story reading, and stresses the use of audio-visual materials.

Observes and participates in early childhood settings such as child care centers, pre-schools, Montessori schools or public schools in Kindergarten through 3rd grade levels. Students spend one hour each week in a seminar session in addition to 60 clock hours in the field. May be taken again for credit.
