Introduces the student to the language used in the health record. Includes a system-by-system review of anatomical disease, and operative terms, abbreviations, radiography procedures, laboratory tests, and pharmacology terms. Part I of II.

Includes the study of prefixes, suffixes, stem words, and technical terms; puts emphasis on the causes and treatment of selected disease processes. Part I of II.

Develops skill in the transcription and preparation of reports for the medical record and in the operation and care of dictating and transcribing equipment. Prerequisite:
HIT 111 or
HIM 111 and ability to type 40 words per minute,

- HIM 131 - Health Information Procedures

Introduces the health care deliver system and (1) the purpose, content, legal and accreditation requirements of health records; (2) the use of health data nomenclatures and classification systems; (3) the organization of registries and indexes. Includes data retrieval, storage and processing systems, quality assurance methodologies, statistical reporting and supervision practices in a health record department. Provides practice in manual and computerized data collection and display techniques.
Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

Examines the development of coding classification systems. Introduces ICD-9-CM coding classification system, its format and conventions. Stresses basic coding steps and guidelines according to body systems. Provides actual coding exercises in relation to each system covered.
