Explores fundamental characteristics of living matter from the molecular level to the ecological community with emphasis on general biological principles. Introduces the diversity of living organisms, their structure, function and evolution. Part I of II.

Examines morphology, genetics, physiology, ecology, and control of microorganisms. Emphasizes application of microbiological techniques to selected fields. Prerequisites one year of college biology and one year of college chemistry or divisional approval.

BIO 215 - Plant Life of Virginia
Focuses on identification and ecological relationships of the native plants of Virginia. Emphasizes shrubs, vines, weeds, wildflowers, ferns, and mushrooms.

BIO 227 - Animal Life of Virginia
Focuses on ecology and identification of the native animal species of Virginia through discussions, lectures, lab and field exercises. Emphasizes birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and invertebrates (including insects of field and stream).
