EMT 105 - First Responder
Prepares the students for certification as a Virginia First Responder. Includes all aspects of pre-hospital basic life support as defined by the Department of Transportation National Curriculum. Includes oxygen administration and resuscitation devices, automated External Defribrillation, and basic splinting of musculoskeletal injuries. Prerequisite: Current CPR certification at the Health Care Provider level.
Lecture 1-3 hours. Laboratory 0-2 hours. Total 3-5 hours per week.

EMT 106 - Emergency Medical Technician/Basic
Prepares student for certification as a Virginia and National Registry EMT/B. Includes all aspects of pre- hospital basic life support as defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's National curriculum for Emergency Medicine Technician/Basic. Prerequisite: CPR certification at the Health Care Provider level.
Lecture 4 hours. Laboratory 4 hours. Total 8 hours per week.

EMT 110 - Emergency Medical Services System Overview
Studies history and development of emergency medical services systems, funding alternatives, system design alternatives, system components and system evaluation. Considers role of EMS councils, training levels for pre- hospital providers, hospital categorization, disaster plans, and public education needs.
Lecture 3 hours per week.

EMT 111 - Emergency Medical Technology I
Provides instruction in basic life support, physical assessment. Introduces role and responsibilities of the emergency medical technician/ambulance. Includes emergency operations, anatomy and physiology, bleeding, shock, MASTrousers, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, soft tissue injuries, fractures and dislocations, abdominal and chest injuries. Required for certification as a Virginia EMT/B.
Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

EMT 112 - Emergency Medical Technology II
Continues material begun in EMT 112. Includes major trauma and medical emergencies, emergency childbirth procedures, lifting and moving patients, vehicle extrication, pediatric and environmental emergencies, and mass casualty situations. Required for certification as a Virginia EMT/B. Prerequisite EMT 111.
Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

EMT 155 - Basic EMT/B Refresher
Reviews material covered in the emergency medical technician/basic course. Emphasizes critical decision making and performance ocjectives. Includes material on recent developments in the area of pre-hospital basic life support. Required for Virginia and National Registry recertifications as an EMT/B. Prerequisite: Current EMT/B certification or division approval.
Lecture 1-2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 3-4 hours per week.

EMT 176 - Introduction to Advanced Life Support
Prepares the student for initial ALS certification and for Virginia and National Registry Intermediate certification. Includes the theory and application of the following: foundations, human systems, pharmacology, overview of shock, venous access, airway management, patient assessment, respiratory emergencies, allergic reaction, and assessment based management. (Conforms to the 1998 Department of Transportation Curriculum for EMT-Intermediate/Paramedics.) Prerequisites: Current State or National Registry EMT-B and CPR.
Lecture 2-3 hours. Laboratory 2-3 hours. Total 4-6 hours per week.

EMT 178 - EMT - Intermediate I
Prepares the student for Virginia and National Registry Intermediate certification. Includes the theory and application of the following: cardiovascular and lymphatic anatomy and physiology, dysrhythmia recognition, cardiovascular, pharmacology, assessment, documentation, communications, and definitive management. Reinforces the theory and application of prerequisite courses. (Conforms to the 1998 Department of Transportation Curriculum for EMT-Intermediate/Paramedics.) Prerequisite: EMT 176.
Lecture 2-3 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4-5 hours per week.

EMT 179 - EMT Intermediate II
Prepares the student for Virginia and National Registry Intermediate certification. Includes the theory and application of the following: neurology, endocrine, poison and overdose, behavioral, environmental, gastrointestinal, pediatrics, gynecology, obstetrics, neonatal pediatrics, and trauma. Reinforces the theory and application of prerequisite courses. (Conforms to the 1998 Department of Transportation Curriculum for EMT-Intermediate/Paramedics.) Prerequisite: EMT 178.
Lecture 4-5 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 6-7 hours per week.
5-6 credits
EMT 186 - ALS Clinical Education I
Provides supervised direct patient contact in appropriate in and out of hospital care facilities. Includes patient care units such as the Emergency Department, Critical Care units, Pediatric, Labor and Delivery, Operating Room, Trauma Centers and advanced life support units. Prerequisite: EMT/B Certification. Other pre- and corequisites may be required by the college.
Laboratory 4 hours per week.

EMT 190 - Coordinated Internship
Supervises on-the-job training in selected business, industrial or service firms coordinated by the college.
Credit/practice ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.

EMT 245 - Operations
Prepares the student for Virginia and National Registry Paramedic certification. Includes the theory and application of the following: medical incident command, rescue awareness and operations, hazardous materials incidents, and crime scene awareness. (Conforms to the current Department of Transportation Curriculum for EMT - Paramedics.)
Lecture 1-2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 3-4 hours per week.
2-3 credits
EMT 255 - EMT-Cardiac/Paramedic Refresher
Reviews material covered in EMT-cardiac and/or paramedic courses. Emphasizes recent developments in the area of pre- hospital advanced life support. Required for Virginia and National Registry recertification a Paramedic and Virginia recertification as an EMT-Cardiac. Prerequisite: Current EMT-shock trauma, cardiac and/or paramedic certification.
Lecture 2-3 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4-5 hours per week.
