ENG 1 - Preparing for College Writing I
Helps students discover and develop writing processes needed to bring their proficiency to the level necessary for entrance in to their respective curricula. Guides students through the process of starting, composing, revising, and editing.

Emphasizes strategies within the writing process to help students with specific writing situations. Develops techniques to improve clarity of writing and raise proficiency to the level necessary for entrance into particular curricula.

ENG 5 - Preparing for College Reading II
Prepares students to be successful in college-level reading assignments. Emphasizes strategies within the reading process to help students read critically and increse appreciation of reading. Guides the student in making inferences, drawing conclusions, detecting relationships between generalizations and supporting details. Includes interpreting graphic aids and library skills.

ENG 50 - Reading and Writing for Teacher Entrance Exams
Provides students with review and practice for the reading and writing portions of the licensure examination required of all beginning teachers in Virginia. Emphasizes critical thinking, reading for comprehension, the writing process, and test-taking. Prerequisite: ENG 111 suggested.

Provides an opportunity to explore topical areas of interest to or needed by students.

ENG 101 - Practical Writing I
Develops writing ability for study, work, and other areas of life with emphasis on occupational correspondence and reports. Guides students in learning writing as a process: understanding audience and purpose, exploring ideas and information, composing, revising, and editing. Supports writing by integrating experiences in thinking, reading, listening, and speaking. Part I of II.

Develops ability to communicate effectively in business and industry, emphasizing gathering, organizing, and transmitting information. Primarily for noncurricular, on- site use in business and industry.

ENG 111 - College Composition I
Introduces students to critical thinking and the fundamentals of academic writing. Through the writing process, students refine topics: develop and support ideas; investigate, evaluate, and incorporate appropriate resources; edit for effective style and usage; and determine appropriate approaches for a variety of contexts, audiences, and purposes. Writing activities will include exposition and argumentation with at least one researched essay.

ENG 112 - College Composition II
Continues to develop college writing with increased emphasis on critical essays, argumentation, and research, developing these competencies through the examination of a range of texts about the human experience. Requires students to locate, evaluate, integrate, and document sources and effectively edit for style and usage. Prerequisite: Students must successfully complete ENG 111 or its equivalent, and must be able to use word processing software.

ENG 115 - Technical Writing
Develops ability in technical writing through extensive practice in composing technical reports and other documents. Guides students in achieving voice, tone, style, and content in formatting, editing, and graphics. Introduces students to technical discourse through selected reading.

Teaches students how to outline, compose, organize, and edit written materials for publication on the World Wide Web. Teaches students how to design basic web pages, compose website content, design web site layout and develop website navigation for a variety of possible audiences. Prerequisite: ENG 111 or approval.

Studies the various parts of speech with application to both writing and speaking. Includes significant assignments to demonstrate skills in a variety of written and verbal communication, and emphasizes the skills necessary for correct everyday usage of the English language.
