LGL 110 - Introduction to Law and the Legal Assistant
Introduces various areas of law in which a legal assistant may be employed. Includes study of the court system (Virginia and federal) as well as a brief overview of criminal law, torts, domestic relations, evidence, ethics, the role of the legal assistant, and other areas of interest.
Lecture 3 hours per week.

LGL 115 - Real Estate Law for Legal Assistants
Studies law of real property and gives in-depth survey of the more common types of real estate transactions and conveyances such as deeds, contracts, leases, and deeds of trust. Focuses on drafting these various instruments and studies the system of recording and search of public documents.

LGL 116 - Domestic Relations and Consumer Law
Studies elements of a valid marriage, grounds for divorce and annulment, separation, defenses, custody, support, adoptions, and applicable tax consequences. Focuses on separation and pre-nuptial agreements, pleadings, and rules of procedure. May include specific federal and Virginia consumer laws.

LGL 117 - Family Law

LGL 125 - Legal Research
Provides an understanding of various components of a law library, and emphasizes research skills through the use of digests, encyclopedias, reporter systems, codes, Shepards's Citations, ALR, and other research tools. May include overview of computer applications and writing projects.

LGL 216 - Trial Preparation and Discovery Practice
Examines the trial process, including the preparation of a trial notebook, pretrial motions, and orders. May include preparation of interrogatories, depositions, and other discovery tools used in assembling evidence in preparation for the trial or an administrative hearing.

LGL 225 - Estate Planning and Probate
Introduces various devices used to plan an estate, including wills, trust, joint ownership and insurance. Considers various plans in light of family situations and estate objectives. Focuses on practices involving administration of an estate including taxes and preparation of forms.

LGL 226 - Real Estate Abstracting
Reviews aspects of abstracting title to real estate, recordation of land transactions, liens, grantor-grantee indices, warranties, covenants, restrictions, and easements.

LGL 230 - Legal Transactions
Presents an in-depth study of general contract law, including formation, breach, enforcement, and remedies. May include an overview of UCC sales, commercial paper, and collections.

LGL 290 - Coordinated Internship
Supervises on-the-job training in selected business, industrial or service firms coordinated by the college.
Credit/practice ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.

LGL 297 - Cooperative Education
Supervises in on-the-job training for pay in approved business, industrial and service firms, coordinated by the college's cooperative education office. Is applicable to all occupational- technical curricula at the discretion of the college.
Credit/work ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.
