HMS 100 - Introduction to Human Services
Introduces human service agencies, roles and careers. Presents an historical perspective of the field as it relates to human services today. Additional topics include values clarification and needs of target populations.

Develops skills needed to function in a helping relationship. Emphasizes skills in attending, listening and responding. Clarifies personal skill strengths, deficits and goals for skill improvement.

HMS 122 - Basic Counseling Skills II
Expands the development of counseling skills needed to function effectively in a helping relationship. Emphasizes skills in responding, personalizing, summarizing and initiating. Clarifies personal skill strengths, deficits and goals for skill improvement. Develops plans for achieving personal and program goals.

HMS 160 - Survey of Mental Health Services in Virginia
Presents an overview of public mental health services in Virginia, current funding and legislativeissues in Virginia mental health, the consumer movement and models of consumer- operated services, and current principles and models of psychiatric rehabilitation.

HMS 161 - Professional Skill Development for Human Services
Teach professional skills necessary to make the transition from the role of MH consumer/client to that of services provider. Will cover confidentiality, professionalism, boundaries and roles, cultural diveristy and personal values.

HMS 162 - Communication Skills for Human Services Professionals
Covers basic written and verbal communication skills, including, listening skills, interviewing techniques, and completing written documentation to professional standards.

HMS 197 - Cooperative Education
Supervises in on-the-job training for pay in approved business, industrial and service firms, coordinated by the college's cooperative education office. Is applicable to all occupational- technical curricula at the discretion of the college.
Credit/work ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.

HMS 227 - The Helper As a Change Agent
Teaches the following skills for implementing alternative models of change and influence: action research, problem- solving, consultation, workshop development, and outreach and advocacy for diverse client populations.

Examines characteristics of the aging process and problems for the elderly. Considers both theoretical and applied perspectives on the following issues: biological, psychological, sociological, economic and political. Part I of II.

Examines the process of aging; its implications in relation to health, recreation, education, transportation, meaningful work or activity, and to community resources. Emphasizes experiencing the aging process, facilitating retirement, and application of the helping relationship to work with older adults.

Provides an overview of current case management theory and practice in the field of mental health.

HMS 251 - Substance Abuse I
Provides knowledge, skills, and insight for working in drug and alcohol abuse programs. Emphasizes personal growth and client growth measures in helping relationships. Stresses various methods of individual and group techniques for helping the substance abuser.

HMS 280 - Understanding Serious Mental Illness
Provides an overview of current information about serious and persistent mental illnesses and their treatment. Includes a particular focus on relapse prevention and recovery.

Supervises on-the-job training in selected business, industrial or service firms coordinated by the college.
