Introduces basic reading and writing skills in preparation for subsequent courses by focusing on vocabulary development (simple phonics, dictionary skills), conventions of Standard English (basic grammar, punctuation, sentence structure), reading comprehension (reading process, topics), study skills (time management, textbook format), and critical thinking skills (fact and opinion).

BSK 42 - Language Arts, Level 2
Emphasizes language arts skills learned in BSK 41 in preparation for more advanced courses. Continues with vocabulary development (phonics, root words, dictionary skills), conventions of Standard English (grammar/punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure), reading comprehension, (main idea, supporting details, transitions), study skills (goal setting), and critical thinking skills (basic point/support). Prerequisite: BSK 41 or appropriate placement.

BSK 43 - Language Arts, Level 3
Improves reading comprehension by examining structural format (organizational patterns) vocabulary development (antonyms, synonyms, homonyms), comprehension (transitions/relationships, implied main idea), study skills (note-taking, organizational skills), and critical thinking (author's purpose, barriers to critical thinking) and improves writing abilities by developing extended paragraphs using conventional Standards of English. Prerequisite: BSK 42 or appropriate placement.

BSK 44 - Language Arts, Level 4
Strengthens reading and writing abilities with intense emphasis on comprehension (organizational pattersn), literary genre (short stories, novels), library skills (research methods) and study skills (Cornell note-taking method), critical thinking (purpose and tone, point of view/bias), and rhetorical patters of development (narration, description, definition, summary writing) for essay writing. Prerequisite: BSK 43 or appropriate placement.

BSK 45 - Language Arts, Level 5
Emphasizes critical reading skills to develop comprehension and critical thinking (point of view/bias, inferences, analogies, and propaganda). Strengthens writing skills by developing paragraphs into five-paragraph essays using formal outlines, thesis statements, rhetorical patterns of development (summary writing, examples, process, and classification) and conventions of Standard English. Prerequisite: BSK 44 or appropriate placement.

BSK 46 - Language Arts, Level 6
Utilizes all skills introduced in previous courses to assist students to become critical readers, thinkers, and writers by focusing on methods on inquiry with special emphasis on problem solving, argument/fallacious arguments, literary genre (poetry, essays), rhetorical patterns of development (comparison, cause/ effect, persuasion/problem solving). A research paper using secondary sources and documentation using MLS format is required. Prerequisite: BSK 45 or appropriate placement.
