CHD 80 - Beginning Skills in Early Childhood Education
Prepares students for work in a child care institution through creating an understanding of family and cultural background and other factors related to the needs of children. Provides an overview of teaching, with orientation to theories, practices, responsibilities, guidelines, current trends and issues in education.

CHD 109 - Music and Movement for Children
Emphasizes theory and practice in movement and music education and the integration of these skills in a curriculum. Designed for teachers and aides in child care, preschool, nursery, or primary schools.

CHD 117 - Introduction to Reading Methods
Introduces current practices of teaching reading in the elementary school. Familiarizes students with materials currently in use, emphasizes observation of various reading techniques and trends in the classroom. NOTE: This course will be replaced with CHD 119 by Fall 2010.

CHD 118 - Language Arts for Young Children
Emphasizes the early development of children's language and literacy skills. Presents techniques and methods for supporting all aspects of early literacy. Surveys children's literature, and examines elements of promoting oral literacy, print awareness, phonological awareness, alphabetic principle, quality storytelling and story reading. Addresses strategies for intervention and support for exceptional children and English Language Learners.

Emphasizes phonetic awareness and alphabetic principles, print awareness and concepts, comprehension and early reading and writing. Introduces early childhood development through activities and experiences in early childhood, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and primary programs. Investigates classroom organization and procedures, and use of classroom time and materials, approaches to education for young children, professionalism, and curricular procedures.

Provides experiences in content, methods, and materials for the development of math, science, and social studies skills in children. CHD 164 - Working with Infants and Toddlers in Inclusive Settings
Examines developmental and behavioral principles and practices and how these provide the most developmentally suitable curriculum and learning environment for very young children. Includes working with very young children with typical development, as well as those who are gifted, or have developmental delays or disabilities.

CHD 165 - Obser. and Parti. in Early Ch/Primary Settings
Focuses on observation as the primary method for gathering information about children in early childhood settings. Emphasizes development of skills in the implementation of a range of observation techniques. May be taken again for credit.

Examines child growth and development from birth to 36 months. Focuses on development in the physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and language domains. Emphasizes the importance of the environment and relationships for healthy brain development during the child's first three years of life. Investigates regulatory standards for infant/toddler care giving.

Supports the student/CDA candidate in completing the Professional Resource File and all documentation required for the national CDA credential.

Reviews the history of and legal requirements for providing intervention and educational services for young children with special needs. Studies the characteristics of children with a diverse array of needs and developmental abilities.
