EMT 105 - First Responder
Prepares the students for certification as a Virginia First Responder. Includes all aspects of pre-hospital basic life support as defined by the Department of Transportation National Curriculum. Includes oxygen administration and resuscitation devices, automated External Defribrillation, and basic splinting of musculoskeletal injuries. Prerequisite: Current CPR certification at the Health Care Provider level.

EMT 106 - Emergency Medical Technician/Basic
Prepares student for certification as a Virginia and National Registry EMT/B. Includes all aspects of pre- hospital basic life support as defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's National curriculum for Emergency Medicine Technician/Basic. Prerequisite: CPR certification at the Health Care Provider level.

EMT 109 - CPR for Healthcare Providers
Provides training in all phases of adult, pediatric, and infant resuscitation procedures. Includes introduction to cardian pathophysiology and preventive measures. Prepares students for certification by the American Heart Association at the Healthcare Provider Level.

Studies history and development of emergency medical services systems, funding alternatives, system design alternatives, system components and system evaluation. Considers role of EMS councils, training levels for pre- hospital providers, hospital categorization, disaster plans, and public education needs.

EMT 111 - Emergency Medical Technology I
Provides instruction in basic life support, physical assessment. Introduces role and responsibilities of the emergency medical technician/ambulance. Includes emergency operations, anatomy and physiology, bleeding, shock, MASTrousers, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, soft tissue injuries, fractures and dislocations, abdominal and chest injuries. Required for certification as a Virginia EMT/B.

Continues material begun in EMT 112. Includes major trauma and medical emergencies, emergency childbirth procedures, lifting and moving patients, vehicle extrication, pediatric and environmental emergencies, and mass casualty situations. Required for certification as a Virginia EMT/B. Prerequisite EMT 111.

EMT 131 - Introduction to Technical Rescuer-Rescuer System
Prepares the student to understand the intricafy of Rescue Systems and its application in an emergency situation. Includes Incident Command safety, building collapse, stokes, Miller Board and LSP, ladder derrick, ladder hinge, A-Frame ladder, tripod, ladder slide, and basic haul systems. Prerequisite: EMT and EMT 133.

EMT 132 - Introduction to Technical Rescuer - Vehicle Extrication
Prepares the student to understand the intricacy of Vehicle Extrication principles and its application in an emergency situation. Includes Kinematics of trauma, safety, vehicle anatomy, new vehicle technology, phases of vehicle rescue, hand tools, lifting and stabilization, hydraulic tools, and special techniques. Prerequisite: EMT.

Discusses the history and development of emergency medical services (EMS), EMS system design, components, and funding sources. Presents leadership and supervision topics for first level EMS managers including planning, decision making, interpersonal communications, time and stress management, and critical incident debriefing.

EMT 176 - Introduction to Advanced Life Support
Prepares the student for initial ALS certification and for Virginia and National Registry Intermediate certification. Includes the theory and application of the following: foundations, human systems, pharmacology, overview of shock, venous access, airway management, patient assessment, respiratory emergencies, allergic reaction, and assessment based management. (Conforms to the 1998 Department of Transportation Curriculum for EMT-Intermediate/Paramedics.) Prerequisites: Current State or National Registry EMT-B and CPR.

EMT 177 - Assessment Based Management
Prepares the student for Virginia and National Registry Paramedic certification. Focuses on integrating pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate an impression and implement a treatment plan for patients with common comlaints. Includes preparation for the National Registry Paramedic Exam. (Conforms to the 1998 Department of Transportation Curriculum for EMT - Paramedics.) Prerequisite: EMT 176

Reinforces the theory and application of prerequisite courses. (Conforms to the 1998 Department of Transportation Curriculum for EMT-Intermediate/Paramedics.) Prerequisite: EMT 178.

Focuses on the principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and drug administration. Includes routes and methods of medication administration, principles of math calculations, general actions of the common drug classifications. Emphasizes drugs used to manage respiratory, cardiac, central nervous system, and endocrine disorders and includes classification, action, indications, contra-indications, precautions, and patient education. Includes an in-depth study of drugs used to manage emergency situations. Prerequisite: EMT 271 or Health Care Professional.

EMT 215 - Principles of Extrication
Focuses on the practical evolutions utilized for vehicle extrication, basic and light duty rescue. Includes techniques of vehicle, water, vertical, and trench rescue, as well as electrical emergencies, bus, aircraft, and subway crashes, radiation hazards, and elevator accidents. Prerequisite EMT/B certification.

EMT 216 - Pre-Hospital Physiological Assessment
Focuses on the application of normal anatomy and physiological phenomena to ill and injured individuals. Emphasizes the analysis and interpretation of physiological data to assist in patient assessment and management. Prerequisite: EMT Certification.

EMT 220 - Introduction to Cardiology
Focuses the interpretation of Lead II electrocardiograms and their significance. Includes an overview of anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system including structure, function, and electrical conduction of the heart. [Recommended as a prerequisite or corequisite for the Paramedic curriculum or for individuals responsible for EKG recognition in the workplace.] Prerequisites: EMT/B certification or Health Care Provider.

EMT 224 - 12 Lead EKG Interpretation
Prepares the health care professional to perform EKG's and to interpret their findings. Includes advanced concepts that build on the knowledge and skills of basic dysrhythmia determination, and topics needed to understand and manage changes on a 12 lead EKG. Includes Bundle branch blocks and hemiblocks, axis deviation, chamber enlargement, and myocardial ischemic and infarction. Addresses clinical significance and interventions of all changes. Extensive practice at EKG interpretation is provided.

EMT 225 - Clinical Experiences for the Cardiac Care Technician
Deals with in-hospital clinical rotations in emergency department, intensive and coronary care units, operating and recovery rooms, level one trauma center, and intravenous team. Required for certification as Virginia EMT-cardiac and/or paramedic. Runs concurrent with EMT 231.

EMT 226 - Dysrhythmia Recognition and Management
Focuses on interpretation of normal electrocardiogram and recognition and management of basic dysrhythmias. Also covers basic anatomy and physiology of cardiovascular system and pathophysiology and management of a cardiovascular dysfunction. Required for Virginia certification as an EMT- Cardiac and/or Paramedic. Prerequisite EMT/B certification or equivalent.

Prepares for functioning as advanced life support provider defined by Department of Transportation's National Paramedic Curriculum. Required for Virginia certification as EMT-cardiac and paramedic. Prerequisite EMT 220.

Continues DOT's National Paramedic Curriculum from EMT 231. EMT 274 - Pathophysiology
Focuses on the pathological processes of disease with emphasis on the anatomical and physiological alterations of the human body by systems. Includes diagnosis and management appropriate to the advanced health care provider in and out of the hospital environment. Prerequisite: EMT 271.

EMT 275 - Concepts in Critical Care
Prepares the paramedic or RN to become a critical care specialist, capable of managing the care of a critical care patient both in a hospital setting or during a high risk inter- facility transfer. Includes advanced concepts that build on the knowledge and skills of the paramedic and/or nursing curricula, as well as topics needed to trouble shoot complex monitoring devices and equipment. Topics include anatomy and physiology based clinical assessment, advanced airway management to include mechanical ventilators, diagnostics data interpre- tation, bedside hemodynamic monitoring, 12 lead EKG interpre- tation and hemodialysis care. Corequisite: EMT 290. Prerequisite: Current EMPT-P, RN or division approval.

EMT 280 - ALS Specialty Care
Concludes didactic portion of DOT's National Paramedic Curriculum. Focuses on the assessment and management of specialty patients including behavioral, obstetrical, pediatric, periatric, and the chronically ill. Prerequisite: EMT/B Certification. Other pre- and corequisites may be required by the college.

Focuses on the development of advanced life support skills for assessing and managing trauma, medical and specialty patients. Scenario practice in assessment based management. Prerequisite: EMT/B Certification. Other pre- and corequisites may be required by the college.

EMT 282 - ALS Clinical Education IV
Provides supervised direct patient contact in appropriate in and out of hospital care facilities. Includes patient care units such as the Emergency Department, Critical Care units, Pediatric, Labor and Delivery, Operating Room, Trauma Centers and advanced life support units. Prerequisite: EMT/B Certification. Other pre- and corequisites may be required by the college.
Laboratory 6 hours per week.

EMT 283 - ALS Field Internship
Provides supervised direct patient contact on out-of-hospital advanced life support units. Prerequisite: EMT/B Certification. Other pre- and corequisites may be required by the college.

Supervises on-the-job training in selected business, industrial or service firms coordinated by the college.

Supervises in on-the-job training for pay in approved business, industrial and service firms, coordinated by the college's cooperative education office. Is applicable to all occupational- technical curricula at the discretion of the college.

Requires completion of a project or research report related to the student's occupational objectives and a study of approaches to the selection and pursuit of career opportunities in the field.
