Course Description
Examines global health issues and prevention efforts. Analyzes the complex relationship between economics, environment, culture and values in resolving health disparities. Discussion topics include infectious diseases, malnutrition, maternal/child/newborn health, chronic diseases, and emerging infections.
Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to health issues within the context of different cultures, economies and health systems around the globe. The course will be presented within the construct of public health theory and practice to introduce the student to this concept of health delivery. This course is offered as an elective to all students regardless of major area of study.
Course Objectives
- Define and explore the scope of global health
- Identify significant milestones in the history of global health
- Describe terminology and standard measures/indicators of health
- Outline the establishment of health goals and priorities
- Identify organizations that impact global health through policy, research, funding, policy and/or health promotion efforts
- Discuss current critical issues in global health
- Compare and contrast strategies used to address selected health issues at the community, national and global levels
- Analyze current recommendations of global health organizations
- Discuss legal and ethical perspectives on global health problems
- Analyze the relationship between economic development, availability of services, socio-cultural issues, and global health
- Evaluate national (U.S.) contributions to resolving global health issues
- Select and utilize credible sources of health information
- Communicate openly and accurately with others regarding the status, impacts and prevention of identified global health issues
