LGL 110 - Introduction to the Law and the Paralegal
Introduces various areas of law in which a paralegal may be employed. Includes study of the court system (Virginia and federal); a brief overview of criminal law, torts, family law, evidence, the U.C.C., contracts, and ethics; the role of the paralegal; and other areas of interest.

LGL 115 - Real Estate Law for Legal Assistants
Studies law of real property and gives in-depth survey of the more common types of real estate transactions and conveyances such as deeds, contracts, leases, and deeds of trust. Focuses on drafting these various instruments and studies the system of recording and search of public documents.

Studies elements of a valid marriage, grounds for divorce and annulment, separation, defenses, custody, support, adoptions, and applicable tax consequences. Includes property settlement agreements, pre- and ante-nuptial agreements, pleadings, and rules of procedure. May include specific federal and Virginia consumer laws.

Provides an understanding of legal terminology with emphasis on developing an understanding of legal terminology in different ways rather than relying solely on learning through rote memorization. Designed to aid students preparing for certification.

Provides an understanding of various components of a law library, and emphasizes research skills through the use of digests, encyclopedias, reporter systems, codes, citations, ALR, and other research tools. LGL 150 - Law and Mediation
Explores concepts, such as conflict resolution, communication and problem solving, as the basis for the exploration of the mediation process. Significant focus is on experiential learning, as informed by initial introduction tot he theoretical basis. Students will be introduced to the variety of settings in which mediation processes are utilized, and the utilization of mediation within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

LGL 216 - Trial Preparation and Discovery Practice
Examines the trial process, including the preparation of a trial notebook, pretrial motions, and orders. May include preparation of interrogatories, depositions, and other discovery tools used in assembling evidence in preparation for the trial or an administrative hearing.

Introduces civil and criminal evidence, including kinds, degrees and admissibility of evidence. Studies methods and techniques of evidence acquisition. Focuses on major crimes, including their classification, elements of proof, intent, conspiracy, responsibility, parties, and defenses. Emphasizes Virginia law. May include general principles of applicable constitutional law and criminal procedure.

Provides a practical understanding and knowledge of litigation support services, including docket control, case management, document production and organization. Examines the use of privileged documents and various court clerks' offices. Focuses on multiple party case management.

Surveys applicable administrative laws, including the Privacy Act, the Administrative Process Act, and Freedom of Information Act. Studies practice and procedure involving the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, State Corporation Commission, Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission, Social Security Administration, Virginia Employment Commission, and other administrative agencies.

Prepares students to electronically file (e-file) in federal court, state court, and appropriate administrative agencies. Provides the student with the proper information on electronic discovery (e-discovery), including how data are requested, located, and searched in the course of litigation. Focuses on the proper process required to be in conformance with the appropriate laws.

Explores the legal issues affecting the elderly population, including Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicare, Medicaid, long-term care insurance, retirement housing and long-term care options, age discrimination, elder abuse and neglect, and estate and planning issues related to incapacity-guardianship, advanced medical directives, power of attorney, and end-of-life decisions.
