HIM 253 - Health Records Coding
Examines the development of coding classification systems. Introduces ICD-9-CM coding classification system, its format and conventions. Stresses basic coding steps and guidelines according to body systems. Provides actual coding exercises in relation to each system covered.
Lecture 3-4 hours per week.

This class is an introduction to ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure coding. An online mandatory meeting will be held TBA. The instructor will provide an overview and introduction to the course and course requirements. Once the orientation class is completed this is a Blackboard ONLINE course. The instructor is available by phone for students throughout the semester. Alternatively the instructor can be on campus in the CAVE to meet with students as necessary for personal tutoring and instruction. Students do not need to take HIM253 and HIM254 in sequence.
"V" sections are offered online anytime and do not require attendance. However, there may be set due dates for assignments, tests, etc. You may need a webcam and microphone for audio and video capabilities. Students may be required to take at least one proctored assessment. The assessment may be given using one of BRCC?s remote proctoring services, such as Respondus Lockdown Browser and Video Monitoring and/or Zoom.
