Course Description
Provides students with a basic understanding of the principles, methods and materials of stage lighting. Instructs students in the fundamentals of stage lighting such as: functions and qualities of light, foundational principles and methods of lighting design, components of lighting instruments and equipment, basic electricity, light board operation, and safety protocol and procedures.
Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
This course will provide students with the basic techniques and methods of lighting design for the stage.
Course Objectives
- Communication
- Effectively communicate theatrical observations through written and/or oral communication such as the basic functions and qualities of stage lighting, the basics of electricity as it applies to stage lighting systems, the fundamental differences of common lighting instruments used in the theatre, etc.
- Critical Thinking
- Identify and explain how various elements of lighting contribute to personal perception through evaluation of a theatrical performance.
- Demonstrate the ability to execute a basic lighting plot.
- Cultural and Social Understanding
- Recognize/describe how theatre influences individuals and/or society.
- Discuss how color choices can hold different meanings in different cultures or settings.
