General Course Purpose

This new course, HLT 123 Understanding Cancer, shares a similar in purpose with the HLT 124 Understanding Diabetes course submitted and approved last year. Obviously both courses offer a new option for students to complete the HLT/PED degree requirement. Perhaps more importantly, the course offers an opportunity for students and the community at large to explore a relevant health issue in depth. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in this country, and one which we can impact given risk assessment, improved health behaviors and early screening. Adding this new course will provide an opportunity for the VCCS to actively address this health issue that personally impacts 1 of 2 men and women (and many more by association). The course will have wide appeal to those interested in preventing cancer, those who work with or care for persons with cancer, and cancer survivors.
