Course Description
Surveys the history and interpretation of architecture, painting and sculpture from the prehistoric era through the Gothic. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course.
Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
ART 101 will develop students' basic knowledge and comprehension of historical art movements in order to critically evaluate the role of social, cultural, and global connections through art historical analysis.
Course Objectives

- Utilize a formal vocabulary to describe art
- Recognize and describe the media and techniques used to create the works of art, as well as the technologies used in architecture
- Cultural and Social Understanding
- Summarize the cultural and artistic characteristics for the cultures presented
- Recognize and analyze common artistic themes used by a variety of cultures
- Critical Thinking
- Critically evaluate works of art and the ways in which these monuments function within their historical, cultural, and religious contexts
- Prehistoric Art, Ancient Near East, Ancient Egypt
- Identify the visual hallmarks of each art period for formal, technical, and expressive qualities
- Interpret the meaning of works based on their themes, subjects, and symbols
- Relate art and architecture to their cultural, economic, and political contexts
- Identify global connections relevant to the topic. Correlations may be drawn from concurrent non-European cultures and related by theme, subject, and/or technique.
- Ancient Aegean and Ancient Greek Art
