CST 149 - Introduction to Makeup for the Theatre at John Tyler Community College
Course Description

Introduces students to the basic anatomy of the human face, and the methods, materials and techniques used to alter the appearance of themselves and others through the use of the fundamentals of stage makeup and prosthetics used to create different characters and looks for different styles and types of theatrical productions.
Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
For transfer into four-year theatre programs which include courses in theatre as part of their curriculum, and to prepare students for employment in theatre and costuming.
Course Objectives
- Demonstrate knowledge of facial anatomy and how to change it using contouring techniques
- Ability to determine in a given situation, which products will create which effects both in simple situations and for special effects
- Apply theatrical makeup such as straight, character, special effects and prosthetic applications on themselves and on others
- Create a mask utilizing costume aspects such as character and overall design
- Learn the basic techniques to create simple prosthetics
- Create an overall design package of theatrical makeup design (and masks if applicable), that demonstrates the importance of how all visual elements support the given interpretation of a particular script
- Techniques and materials used in moulage applications
- Demonstrate an ability to collaborate by working in teams on a project
