Course Description

Introduces the basic techniques and theories of stage movement for the purpose of creating truthful physical behavior in the theatre. Part I of II.
Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
Provides students with the basic skills and knowledge needed to use the body as a responsive and expressive instrument in a theatrical setting.
Course Objectives
- Demonstrate an increased awareness and range of the full physicality of the body as an instrument of expression.
- Experience various movement techniques and develop a physical warm up.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the actual anatomical design of the body, postural coordination system and breath/movement connection.
- Utilize basic tools for the evaluation and performance of traditional theatrical text.
- Demonstrate a deeper understanding of awareness, balance, control and coordination.
- Select, rehearse and perform personal and/or group movement pieces.
- Experience live theater as both a performer and audience member.
- Develop a physical and intellectual vocabulary in order to describe, analyze and perform movement techniques.
