General Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the traditional old time string band music found in the central Appalachian region. Students will explore the historical and cultural identities of the tunes and songs, learn about the musicians, past and present, as well as current musical venues available to them for performance. Involving students of all ages in the petlormance of old time music of the Appalachians will create a better appreciation of this style of music for supporting and preserving the music. Introducing students to regional musicians and music venues will support the economic development of the region through state initiatives such as the Crooked Road, Virginia 's Heritage Music Trail. This course is for the Career Stud ies Certificate in Old Time Music.
