Studies normal pregnancy, childbirth, post-partum, and the neonate along with complications associated with each phase using a family-centered approach.
Lecture 2 hours. Total 2 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
This course will provide students with an introduction into maternal / newborn nursing including both normal and abnormal variations within the pre-, intra- and post-partum periods. This 2 credit course will integrate the needs of the family from conception to birth. This course does not include a lab component.
Course Objectives
- Discuss past, present, and future trends as related to obstetrics and child health care issues
- Discuss anatomy and physiology of females and males
- Describe fetal circulation
- Discuss prenatal care and adaptations to pregnancy
- Utilize the nursing process to care for the pregnant woman and fetus throughout all phases of pregnancy, labor, delivery, and post-partum care.
- Discuss the nurse's role in women's health care
- Utilize the nursing process to care for the suspected client with domestic violence
Major Topics to be Included
- Identify client emotional preparedness for pregnancy (e.g., support systems, perception of pregnancy)
- Assist with fetal heart monitoring for the antepartum client
- Assist with monitoring a client in labor
- Perform care of postpartum client (e.g., perineal care, assistance with infant feeding)
- Contribute to newborn plan of care
- Reinforce client teaching on infant care skills (e.g., feeding, bathing, positioning)
- Monitor recovery of stable postpartum client
- Monitor client ability to care for infant
