Studies normal and abnormal variations in children from infancy to adolescence. Covers milestones in all aspects of growth, development and common childhood disorders using the family-centered approach.
Lecture 2 hours. Total 2 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
This course is design to promote the understanding of the pediatric population normal growth and development, covering normal childhood variances and common childhood diseases and illnesses; both acquired and inherited. Focuses on care of the child both in a hospital setting and at home and special considerations within the pediatric populations. This is a 2 credit course, this course does not have a lab / clinical component.
Course Objectives
- Discuss the growth, development, and nutrition throughout all phases of pediatric development
- Utilize the nursing process to provide care to the hospitalized child
- Discuss and provide adaptations for the child and family related to health care
- Utilize the nursing process to provide care to the child with psychological and physiological disease processes.
- Discuss and utilize complementary and alternative therapies in maternity and pediatric nursing interventions
- Utilize the nursing process to recognize and care for the suspected pediatric abuse and/or domestic violence client and family
Major Topics to be Included
- Collect baseline physical data (e.g., skin integrity, or height and weight)
- Identify clients in need of immunizations (required and voluntary)
- Identify precautions and contraindications to immunizations
- Provide care that meets the needs of the newborn less than 1 month old through the infant or toddler client through 2 years
- Provide care that meets the needs of the preschool, school age and adolescent client ages 3 through 17 years
- Identify and report client deviations from expected growth and development
- Identify occurrence of expected body image changes
- Identify barriers to communication
- Identify barriers to learning
- Compare client development to norms
- Modify approaches to care in accordance with client development stage
