Course Description
Focuses on the development of leadership within the field of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), topics include civic engagement, personal wellness, resource management, ethical considerations in leadership and research.
Lecture 1 hour. Total 1 hour per week.

General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to prepare emergency responders, primarily emergency medical services students for their role as a leader within their agency, as well as their community. This course integrates comprehensive knowledge of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems, health, safety and wellness of the EMS provider; research, educational and career development.
Course Objectives
- Discuss the role of the paramedic related to public health and non-emergent issues
- Describe the components of professionalism and their importance to becoming a leader
- Define peer-reviewed literature and describe how this relates to a practicing paramedic
- Analyze examples of evidence based research and reasoning (the scientific method) pertinent to paramedic practice
- Identify the role of verbal and electronic communications in the provision of EMS
- Identify current problems and challenges related to the health, safety and wellness of the EMS workforce in the U.S.
- Analyze key goals and strategies to improve EMS personal safety as outlined in: The Emergency Medical Services Workforce Agenda for the Future, the NHTSA Strategy for a National EMS Culture of Safety
- Propose ways that Emergency Medical Services can be more proactively involved in developing "healthy communities" (Community Paramedicine)
- List ways a paramedic can promote injury prevention in his or her community
- Discuss the effects of stress and preventative measures for the Paramedic provider.
- Evaluate ethical issues in EMS
- Create a resume and/or curriculum vitae
- Demonstrate effective interview techniques and skills
- Define emotional intelligence and its importance to the Paramedic provider
