Course Description
Provides supervised direct patient contact introducing the student to the assessment and emergency care of sick and injured patients.
Laboratory 2 hours. Total 2 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
The course is a component of the Emergency Medical Technician curriculum governed by Virginia Office of EMS. At least 10 patient contacts, where the student participates in patient care are mandated. It requires 20-30 clock hours in the average 911 system.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
This course is a co-requisite for either EMS 111 or EMS 113, depending upon the program in which the student is participating.
Course Objectives
- Participate in the assessment of patients
- Participate in the care of the sick and injured
- Apply skills learned in lab to live patients as part of the local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system.
Major Topics to be Included
- Preparation for responding to an emergency call in a 911 system.
- Establishing scene safety and management
- Assessment of medical and trauma patients
- Providing primary and emergency care for the sick and injured
- Demonstrating appropriate written and verbal communication skills with patients, bystanders, fellow EMS providers and hospital professionals.
