HIM 100 - Introduction to the Health Care Delivery System
Introduces the organization of health care delivery system with emphasis on types of providers and the role that accrediting and licensing bodies play in the delivery of health care.

Stresses advanced International Classification of Diseases Clinical Modification Coding II (ICD-9-CM) coding skills through practical exercises. NOT INTENDED FOR HIT MAJORS.

Introduces the basic concepts, terminology, etiology, and characteristics of pathological processes.

HIM 130 - Healthcare Information Systems
Teaches basic concepts of microcomputer software (to include operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications. Focuses on microcomputer applications and information systems in the Healthcare environment. Provides a working introduction to electronic health information systems for allied health, teaching students how the adoption of electronic health records affects them as future healthcare professionals.

Focuses on health data collection, storage, retrieval and reporting systems, with emphasis on the role of the computer in accomplishing these functions. Part I of II.

HIM 143 - Managing Electronic Billing in a Medical Practice
Presents practical knowledge on use of computer technology in medical practice management. Develops basic skills in preparation of universal billing claim. Explores insurance claim processing issues.

Presents the legal requirements associated with health record documentation. Emphasizes the policies and procedures concerning the protection of the confidentiality of patient's health records.

Focuses on concepts of facility wide performance improvement, resource management and risk management. Applies tools for data collection and analysis.

Explores computer technology and system application in health care. Introduces the information systems life cycle.

HIM 233 - Electronic Health Records Management
Studies new trends in management and processing of health information with emphasis on the electronic health record (EHR). Covers the definition, benefits, standards, functionality, confidentiality and security, and impact of the EHR in the healthcare environment. Explores implementation of the EHR including infrastructure required, project management techniques, information technology systems, workflow processes and redesign in various health care settings. Discusses legal issues created by implementation of the EHR.

Prerequisites: HIM 130 and HIM 230.

HIM 253 - Health Records Coding
Examines the development of coding classification systems. Introduces ICD-9-CM coding classification system, its format and conventions. Stresses basic coding steps and guidelines according to body systems. Provides actual coding exercises in relation to each system covered.

HIM 254 - Advanced Coding and Reimbursement
Focuses on the applications and evaluation of advanced coding skills through practical exercises using actual healthcare data; while examining the components of DRGs, APCs and APGs and other prospective payment in the healthcare environment. Utilizes current coding standards in identifying payment methodologies, revenue cycle management and reimbursement.
