Course Description
Explores the language of dance through an introduction to basic elements, forms, and diverse styles across time. Develops techniques for observing dance analytically and critically.

General Course Purpose
DAN 121 introduces the student to the foundations of dance through multiple genres. The course is a survey of numerous dance genres and their history.
Course Objectives
- Critical Thinking
- Analyze the basic markers that denote the main dance genres
- Develop, through experience, the ability to formulate individual aesthetic judgments pertaining to dance
- Written Communication
- Express, in writing, an appreciation for the rich variety of human movement called dance
- Dance History
- Categorize dance genres and styles and discuss their purpose and effects
- Analyze a wide body of performances and determine the technical and artistic strategies and resources used by a variety of choreographers and dancers throughout history
- Identify, compare, and contrast dance performances from the global perspective, past and present
- Performance Analysis
- Compare technical and aesthetic values in theatrical performances and analyze them for methods of interpretation and production qualities
