- LGL 110 - Introduction to the Law and the Paralegal
- Introduces various areas of law in which a paralegal may be employed. Includes study of the court system (Virginia and federal); a brief overview of criminal law, torts, family law, evidence, the U.C.C., contracts, and ethics; the role of the paralegal; and other areas of interest.Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 115 - Real Estate Law for Legal Assistants
- Studies law of real property and gives in-depth survey of the more common types of real estate transactions and conveyances such as deeds, contracts, leases, and deeds of trust. Focuses on drafting these various instruments and studies the system of recording and search of public documents.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 117 - Family Law
- Studies elements of a valid marriage, grounds for divorce and annulment, separation, defenses, custody, support, adoptions, and applicable tax consequences. Includes property settlement agreements, pre- and ante-nuptial agreements, pleadings, and rules of procedure. May include specific federal and Virginia consumer laws.Lecture 3 hours. 3 credits - LGL 125 - Legal Research
- Provides an understanding of various components of a law library, and emphasizes research skills through the use of digests, encyclopedias, reporter systems, codes, citations, ALR, and other research tools. May include research through electronic databases, overview of computer applications, and writing projects.Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 126 - Legal Writing
- Studies proper preparation of various legal documents, including legal memoranda, letters, and pleadings. Involves practical applications. May include case and appellate briefs.Lecture 3 hours per week.
Prerequisite: ENG 111 or permission of instructor.3 credits - LGL 130 - Law Office Administration and Management
- Introduces management principles and systems applicable to law firms, including record keeping, disbursements, escrow accounts, billing, and purchasing. May include accounting methods and software packages applicable to law firms.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 200 - Ethics for the Paralegal
- Examines general principles of ethical conduct applicable to paralegals. Includes the application of rules of ethics to the practicing paralegal.Lecture 1-3 hours. Total 1-3 hour per week.
1-3 credits - LGL 215 - Torts
- Studies fundamental principles of the law of torts and may include preparation and use of pleadings and other documents involved in the trial of a civil action. Emphasizes intentional torts, negligence, personal injury, products liability, and malpractice cases.Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 216 - Trial Preparation and Discovery Practice
- Examines the trial process, including the preparation of a trial notebook, pretrial motions, and orders. May include preparation of interrogatories, depositions, and other discovery tools used in assembling evidence in preparation for the trial or an administrative hearing.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 218 - Criminal Law
- Focuses on major crimes, including their classification, elements of proof, intent, conspiracy, responsibility, parties, and defenses. Emphasizes Virginia law. May include general principles of applicable constitutional law and criminal procedure.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 222 - Information Technology for the Paralegal
- Provides extensive instruction on the use of technology in the law office, including word processing tools, spreadsheet programs, database management systems, office management programs, case management programs, electronic mail, the cloud, and use of the Internet in the practice of law.Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
Prerequisite: ITE 115 or divisional approval.3 credits - LGL 225 - Estate Planning and Probate
- Introduces various devices used to plan an estate, including wills, trust, joint ownership and insurance. Considers various plans in light of family situations and estate objectives. Focuses on practices involving administration of an estate including taxes and preparation of forms.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 230 - Legal Transactions
- Presents an in-depth study of general contract law, including formation, breach, enforcement, and remedies. May include an overview of UCC sales, commercial paper, and collections.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 235 - Legal Aspects of Business Organizations
- Studies fundamental principles of agency law and the formation of business organizations. Includes sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporation, limited liability companies, and other business entities. Reviews preparation of the documents necessary for the organization and operation of businesses.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 236 - Elder Law
- Explores the legal issues affecting the elderly population, including Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicare, Medicaid, long-term care insurance, retirement housing and long-term care options, age discrimination, elder abuse and neglect, and estate and planning issues related to incapacity-guardianship, advanced medical directives, power of attorney, and end-of-life decisions.Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Contact Hours: 3
3 credits - LGL 238 - Bankruptcy
- Provides a practical understanding of non-bankruptcy alternatives and the laws of bankruptcy including Chapters 7, 11, 12 and 13 of the Bankruptcy Code. Emphasizes will be placed on preparing petitions, schedules, statements, and other forms.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 250 - Immigration Law
- Provides an introduction to immigration law and policy, giving an overview of the United States legal system that regulates the admission, exclusion, removal, and naturalization of immigrants. Includes issues concerning refugees, asylum seekers, illegal immigrants, and undocumented aliens.Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
3 credits - LGL 290 - Coordinated Internship
- Supervises on-the-job training in selected business, industrial or service firms coordinated by the college.Credit/practice ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.
1-5 credits - LGL 297 - Cooperative Education
- Supervises in on-the-job training for pay in approved business, industrial and service firms, coordinated by the college's cooperative education office. Is applicable to all occupational- technical curricula at the discretion of the college.Credit/work ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.
