- BLD 105 - Shop Practices and Procedures
- Introduces basic hand and power tools with emphasis on proper care and safety practices. Introduces materials used in building trades including metals, plastics, and woods with stress placed on the processing techniques of each. Emphasizes fasteners such as screws, rivets, and glues as well as brazed, soldered, and welded joints.Lecture 1-2 hours. Laboratory 2-3 hours. Total 3-5 hours per week.
2-3 credits - BLD 110 - Introduction to Construction
- Covers basic knowledge and requirements needed in the construction trades. Introduces use of tools and equipment, with emphasis on construction safety, including personal and tool safety. Provides a working introduction to basic blueprint reading and fundamentals of construction mathematics.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - BLD 111 - Blueprint Reading and the Building Code
- Introduces reading and interpreting various kinds of blueprints and working drawings with reference to local, state, and national building codes.Lecture 2 hours.Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.
3 credits - BLD 125 - Introduction to Carpentry Trades
- Introduces entry-level students to the carpentry trade(s), the Wheels of Learning apprenticeship programs, various types of fasteners, and the wide variety of building materials.Lecture 3 hours per week.
Prerequisite: BLD 110.3 credits - BLD 126 - Basic Carpentry Principles
- Introduces students to basic floor and wall construction.Lecture 3 hours per week.
Prerequisite: BLD 125.3 credits - BLD 131 - Carpentry Framing I
- Presents an introduction to carpentry with emphasis on residential construction. Covers safety on the job, appropriate use of power tools, basic construction techniques, an introduction to working drawings, and the team approach to residential buildings. Presents an introduction to selection and use of ladders and scaffolds, basic form removal and demolition, and use of basic first aid. Includes the concepts of carpentry framing for floors, walls, ceilings, porches and decks. Includes theoretical and practical application as well as the concepts of carpentry framing for roof, truss installation and door and window installation. Part I of II.Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 4 hours. Total 7 hours per week.
5 credits - BLD 132 - Carpentry Framing II
- Presents an introduction to carpentry with emphasis on residential construction. - Continues the study of carpentry with emphasis on residential construction. Covers safety on the job, appropriate use of power tools, basic construction techniques, an introduction to working drawings, and the team approach to residential buildings. Continues the study of selection and use of ladders and scaffolds, basic form removal and demolition, and use of basic first aid. Includes the concepts of carpentry framing for floors, walls, ceilings, porches and decks. Includes theoretical and practical application as well as the concepts of carpentry framing for roof, truss installation and door and window installation. Part I of II.Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 4 hours. Total 7 hours per week.
5 credits - BLD 140 - Principles of Plumbing Trade I
- Studies the plumbing trade, the structure of the plumbing trade, apprenticeship standards, job safety, tools of the trade, the approved installation of plumbing materials, types of sanitary drainage pipe and piping layout of sanitary piping.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - BLD 144 - Plumbing Code and Certification Preparation
- Teaches the use of the plumbing code standard book (BOCA), references standards, the reading and use of charts and tables, and preparation for the journeyman's certification and the cross-connection control certification test.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - BLD 159 - Mechanical Code and Certification Preparation
- Discusses local, state, and national building codes as they relate to the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical systems in residential and commercial buildings. Includes gas and oil burners, venting, flues and sizing of systems.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - BLD 190 - Coordinated Internship
- Supervises on-the-job training in selected business, industrial or service firms coordinated by the college.Credit/practice ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.
1-5 credits - BLD 195 - Topics In
- Provides an opportunity to explore topical areas of interest to or needed by students.May be used also for special honors courses. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.
