EMS 154 - ALS Cardiac Care at Virginia Highlands Community College
Course Description

Continues the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services Intermediate and/or Paramedic curricula. Includes Advanced Life Support (ALS) airway management, electrical therapy, pharmacology, drug and fluid administration with emphasis on patient assessment, differential diagnosis and management of cardiovascular emergencies. It will incorporate the current American Heart Association (AHA) - ACLS guidelines and curriculum including stroke management.
Credits 2. Lecture 1 hour. Lab 2 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
The course will cover the assessment and management of cardiovascular and neurovasular emergencies. This course is part of the state-mandated curriculum that leads to taking the National Registry Intermediate, and/or Paramedic certification exam.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Pre/Co-requisites: EMS 153.
Course Objectives
- Utilize patient assessment findings to formulate a field impression for patients with cardiac emergencies
- Utilize current AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) guidelines to determine and Implement the treatment plan for these patients.
