MUS 159 - Improvisational Techniques at Virginia Western Community College

Introduces the principles of improvisation using harmonic structures and progressions from the period of common practice. Includes listening to and performing music of the standard jazz and popular repertoire. Develops performance skills utilizing specific improvisational devices employed in different historical periods.
Credits 3. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

It is the purpose of the Improvisational Techniques to utilize the students? interested in improvising instrumental and vocal jazz at the beginning skill level, prepare and produce artistic performances for the college and community in varied concert venues and repertoire representing the different jazz styles.
