Introduces techniques of architectural drafting, including lettering, dimensioning, and symbols. Requires production of plans, sections, and elevations of a simple building. Studies use of common reference material and the organization of architectural working drawings. Requires development of a limited set of working drawings, including a site plan, related details, and pictorial drawings. Part I of II. Credit will not awarded for both ARC 121 and ARC 123.

Introduces techniques of architectural communication including orthographic projection and sketching as well as 3d views and modeling. Requires the manual production of plans, sections, elevations and 3d views and models of a simple building. Includes dimensioning, detailing and rendering. Part I of II. Credit will not be awarded for both ARC 121 and ARC 123.

ARC 130 - Introduction to Materials & Methods of Construction
Introduces the physical properties and characteristics of building materials and methods of construction. Includes review of residential and light commercial wood-frame construction techniques and an introduction to steel and concrete structural systems.

ARC 131 - Materials and Methods of Construction I
Covers use of wood as a building material in all phases of construction. Deals with species used, growth characteristics, hygroscopic properties, and applications of lumber and plywood. Includes wood framing systems, premanufactured components, modular systems, windows, doors, cabinets and flooring.
Lecture 3 hours per week.

ARC 132 - Materials and Methods of Construction II
Studies masonry and concrete materials related to the construction industry: materials, mixtures, handling and placing, finishing and curing and protection of concrete work. Includes brick and cementitious materials, mortar, and workmanship, and iron, steel, and aluminum as used in construction.
Lecture 3 hours per week.

Studies materials used in construction of buildings, covering foundations to structural framing systems. Includes appropriate use of materials for various construction types. Analyzes the various forces acting on a building and surveys the structural elements used to resist them. Uses case studies of ordinary and unusual structures to illustrate concepts of structural design. Provides a conceptual overview of structural systems for students interested in the design and construction of buildings. Requires some elementary algebra. Includes exercises in reading structural drawings and tables.

Teaches the principles and techniques of architectural drawing practices through the use of architecture specific CAD software. Utilizes the commands and features of the software to generate drawings that emphasize architectural design and structural systems. Use local prerequisites.

Uses advanced features of architectural CAD software to teach students to develop working drawings and details that adhere to the practices and techniques of architectural drawing principles. Use local prerequisites.

Studies the impact of building codes and zoning ordinances on site design; storm drainage, grading design, erosion and flood control; site materials for paving and retaining walls; site utilities.

ARC 241 - Building Mechanical Systems
Studies components and design for systems in residential and commercial building. Covers plumbing supply and drainage, including storm drainage and private sewage disposal. Requires calculation of overall heat balances for buildings as basis for design of heating and cooling systems.

Studies components and design for lighting and electrical systems, security, fire, and smoke alarms.

Studies energy sources and strategies for use in buildings; heat loss and heat gain; heating and cooling equipment and system; water supply, distribution and waste systems and equipment; principles of electricity, electrical systems and equipment.

Introduces the characteristics of building materials and the methods of construction in which these materials are used in the erection of structures. Introduces the physical properties of steel, concrete, timber, glass, and related materials as well as methods used in testing materials. All sixteen CSI divisions are discussed.

Covers professional role of the architectural technician with regard to the construction industry. Includes building codes and their effect on specifications and drawings.
