Course Description
Introduces art from prehistoric times to the present day. Describes architectural styles, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and painting techniques. Highlights major artists and key contributions from global and Western culture. Covers content chronologically and/or thematically. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course.
Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
ART 100 is a foundation level course that provides the art history major and non-major alike a strong grounding in the formal study of art.

- Develop a formal vocabulary to describe art
- Recognize the media and techniques used to create works of art, as well as the technologies used in architecture, and explain their significance
- Cultural and Social Understanding
- Identify major artists and works of art
- Distinguish art historical periods and recognize their stylistic traits

- Evaluate works of art within their historical context
- Mediums and Techniques
- Identify different media in the arts that include both two- and three-dimensional forms
- Examine the basic formal elements, techniques, concepts, and vocabulary related to the specific media

- Identify the visual hallmarks of each art period for formal, technical, and expressive qualities
- Analyze works of art based on their themes, subjects, symbols, and historical context from a diversity of cultural perspectives
- Relate art and architecture to their cultural, economic, and political contexts
