Course Description
Introduces students to the basic techniques, materials and methods of theatrical costume construction. Covers hand sewing, machine sewing, familiarity with different types of materials and their uses, the use of patterns, shop safety, distressing techniques and wardrobe duties.
Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
CST 147 introduces students to the basic techniques, materials and methods of theatrical costume construction.
Course Objectives
- Communication
- Effectively communicate performative observations through written and/or oral communication

- Identify and explain how various garments are made and how patterns are used to create costumes
- Cultural and Social Understanding
- Recognize/describe how various costumes are connected with different cultures and time periods

- Demonstrate the development of receptivity to different types of garment construction
- Cultivate personal goals related to sewing (learning to hem, sew buttons, etc.)
- Costume Construction
- Illustrate costume construction techniques including hand and machine sewing, reading and cutting patterns, proper pattern layout, and how to assemble basic costume pieces
- Identify and describe the uses for different types of fabric, both by content and construction
- Create a selection of costume pieces and accessories created from given patterns, utilizing the correct fundamentals of costuming construction
- Model basic costume craft skills, concentrating on those used in the practice of distressing
- Demonstrate an ability to collaborate by working in teams on a project
- Wardrobe Skills
- Explain basic theatrical wardrobe skills and tools
- Summarize the basics of laundry operations
- Basic Tailoring
- Show how to take body measurements
- Demonstrate how to complete basic hand sewing activities
- Identify the parts of a sewing machine
- Illustrate how to trim seams, identify closures (snaps and hooks, buttons, frogs), and basic stitching techniques (hem stitch, cross stitch, princess seam, doublet seam)
- Safety
- Demonstrate mastery of OSHA safety regulations as they apply to costume construction and costume shop operations
