DMS 206 - Introduction to Sonography

Course Description

Effective: 2017-08-01

Introduces the diagnostic foundations of diagnostic medical Sonography, including terminology, scan plane orientations, anatomical relationships, departmental administrative operations, hospital organization and basic patient care principles.
Lecture 2-3 hours per week. Total 2-3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

Hybrid lecture class presents students with the diagnostic foundations and skills needed to handle patients in the clinical setting to include interpersonal communication skills, medical terminology, scan plane orientations, anatomical relationships departmental operations, hospital orientation and basic patient care principles.

DMS 208 - Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation I

Course Description

Effective: 2017-08-01

Discusses and solves mathematical problems associated with human tissue, basic instrumentation and scanning technology. Focuses on the use of pulse-echo principles as applied to diagnostic sonography. Presents the physics of sound-tissue interactions and explores ultrasound instrumentation controls and functions.
Lecture 2-3 hours per week. Total 2-3 hours per week.
2-3 credits

General Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental principles of acoustical physics.

DMS 209 - Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation II

Course Description

Effective: 2017-08-01

Focuses on the areas of ultrasound instrumentation, image artifacts, biologic effects, quality control. Explores Doppler principles and applications and basic types of equipment.
Lecture 2-3 hours per week. Total 2-3 hours per week.

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the advanced study of acoustical physics.

DMS 223 - Introduction to Vascular Ultrasound

Course Description

Effective: 2017-08-01

Discusses the principles of vascular ultrasound, the related anatomy and more common pathologies detected as well as the physiology and hemodynamics detected and evaluated with ultrasound. Provides hands-on practice through vascular scanning in a laboratory setting.
Lecture 1-2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 3-4 hours per week.
2-3 credits

General Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to introduce vascular sonography as cross-training for students studying a sonography specialty area other than vascular ultrasound. This will enable DMS students to function in clinical settings that practice multiple sonography specialties.

DMS 240 - Advanced Topics in Ultrasound

Course Description

Effective: 2018-05-01

Examines the clinical applications within the sub-specialties of breast, musculoskeletal and abdominal vascular ultrasound, including interpretation of normal and abnormal sonographic patterns and pathology. Includes lessons on basic scanning techniques and protocols.
Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
3 credits

General Course Purpose

The proposed course, endorsed by the Program Advisory Committee, will better prepare sonography students for the advanced procedures/exams they will encounter in the current and future job market.
