- Introduces the "driver task" as related to the highway transportation system and factors that influences performance ability. Prepares students so they may be eligible to take certification exams for driving school instructors in both public and private schools.Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

- Discusses issues surrounding single-parent families and the causal factor including: separation, divorce, death, and teenage pregnancies. Explores the effects on both the parent and the child. Familiarizes students with services available in the community which support the single-parent family.Lecture 3 hours per week.

- Provides an orientation to the teaching profession in Virginia, including historical perspectives, current issues, and future trends in education on the national and state levels. Emphasizes information about teacher licensure examinations, steps to certification, teacher preparation and induction programs, and attention to critical shortage areas in Virginia. Includes supervised field placement (recommended: 40 clock hours) in a K-12 school.Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.
Successful completion of 24 credits of transfer courses or departmental approval for students accepted into Virginia's Teachers for Tomorrow program.3 credits - EDU 205 - Curriculum and Instructional Procedures
- Examines the role of curriculum in education and the alignment of curriculum to state and national standards. Emphasizes how curriculum implementation, assessment methods, textbook and material selection, and technology updates impact instruction. Addresses how to develop curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 206 - Classroom and Behavioral Management
- Provides an overview of issues that arise in classrooms. Emphasizes methods for managing the diverse needs of students in order to promote a positive learning environment. Addresses how to establish and communicate expectations for effective instruction.Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 207 - Human Growth and Development
- Provides an overview of the physical, intellectual, cognitive, language, social, and emotional development of human beings from birth to adolescence. Emphasizes how hereditary and environmental influences impact the development of the whole child.Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 214 - Instructional Principles of Driver Education
- Analyzes rules and regulations that govern the conduct of Driver Education programs with special emphasis on organization and administration. Includes uses in the classroom, driving range and on the street. Prepares students so they may be eligible to take the state certification exam in driver education. Prerequisite: EDU 114.Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 220 - Teaching Reading
- Provides instruction in concepts and strategies involved in teaching reading at the K-12 levels. Includes topics on literacy and components and development, various reading programs, technology integration, and assessment tools. May include field placement in a K-12 school.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 225 - Audiovisual Materials and Computer Software
- Prepares students to construct graphic teaching aids, to select and develop materials for instructional support, to operate, maintain and use audiovisual equipment used in the classroom.Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 235 - Health, Safety, and Nutrition Education
- Focuses on the health and developmental needs of children and the methods by which these needs are met. Emphasizes positive health, hygiene, nutrition and feeding routines, childhood diseases, and safety issues. Emphasizes supporting the mental and physical well being of children, as well as procedures for reporting child abuse.Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 250 - Introduction to Developmental Disabilities
- Presents an overview, history, and current philosophy of the developmental disabilities program. Provides descriptions and examines causes of developmental disabilities, identifies intervention strategies, promotes social and legal advocacy, explores employment and career opportunities. Laboratory experiences include a minimum of ten hours of observation of work settings.Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 5 hours per week.
4 credits - EDU 254 - Teaching Basic Academic Skills to Exceptional Children
- Develops competencies required to teach readiness and basic skills to children with special needs in private or public school settings. Includes the preparation of lesson plans, instructional units, and individualized Education Programs (IEP's). Includes child abuse recognition and intervention training. Emphasizes exceptionalities for students ages 2-21 under Public Law 94-142. Familiarizes students with the indicators of effective teaching.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 255 - Behavior Modification in School and Community Settings
- Presents basic principles of behavior modification and behavioral learning theory. Promotes skills in pinpointing, observing, and recording human behavior. Includes learning objectives that address attitude, knowledge, and mental and physical skill competencies needed for implementing behavioral programs.4 Credits. Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 5 hours per week.
4 credits - EDU 270 - Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Explores the nature of autism and related developmental disorders. Details and discusses current evaluation and assessment measures in ASD. Discusses current intervention strategies and their implementation in the school setting. Part I of III.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 271 - Methodologies and Curriculum Development for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Details current methodologies used when treating and teaching students with ASD. Emphasizes evidence based intervention strategies such as Assessment of Basic Learning and Language Skills (ABLLS), Verbal Behavior, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), and the use of visual schedules. Part II of III. Prerequisite: EDU 270.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 272 - Methods for Supporting Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the School Setting
- Discusses effective socialization and behavior management strategies specific to ASD. Presents strategies to promote social skill development and generalization. Demonstrates mastery of assessment and data collection with emphasis on functional behavior. Student will assist a classroom teacher to develop social or behavioral intervention strategies for an ASD child. Part III of III. Prerequisite: EDU 271.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 280 - Technology Standards for Teachers
- Provides K-12 classroom teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to fulfill the Commonwealth of Virginia's Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel. Certification is dependent on the supervisor's or employer's approval. Pre-requisite of ITE 115 or instructor approval.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 285 - Teaching Online Program (TOP)
- Instructs educators in the method and practice for delivery of online course content. Includes instructional technology and instructional design theory and practice, with skills and strategies that educators will use to engage students and create a collaborative online environment.Prerequisite: Proficient working knowledge of the current VCCS online course delivery system. Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 286 - Multimedia for Online Distance and E-learning (MODEL)
- Provides students an opportunity to identify, create, and implement multimedia in an e-learning course. Covers an introduction to multimedia, the ASSURE model of instructional design, various media formats, screen design and user friendliness, storyboards and storyboard development, multimedia development, assessment creation, and incorporating multimedia into Blackboard.Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 287 - Instructional Design for Online Learning
- Prepares educators to design online courses that encourage active learning and student participation. Focuses on instructional design practices including the development of content tied to learning objectives and a peer-based approach to evaluating courses.Lecture 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 288 - Engaging Online Learners with Web 2.0 Applications (ENROLL 2.0)
- Introduces learners to the fundamentals of using various Web 2.0 applications in order to conduct and manage an online classroom in a manner that promotes student engagement and learning.Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
3 credits - EDU 289 - Learning on the Go (LoGo)
- Provides introduction to the fundamentals of implementing mobile technologies in the online teaching and learning environment. Focuses on increasing student engagement using mobile technologies and includes an overview of mobile learning, common applications, researching and applying mobile learning, developing content and materials to be used with mobile devices, assessing in the mobile learning environment, social media, productivity, and a self-reflection.Credits - 3.
