GIS 200 - Geographical Information Systems I

Course Description

Provides hands-on introduction to a dynamic desktop GIS (Geographic Information System). Introduces the components of a desktop GIS and their functionality. Emphasizes manipulation of data for the purpose of analysis, presentation, and decision-making.
Lecture 2 - 3 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 - 5 hours per week.

GIS 203 - Cartography for GIS

Course Description

Effective: 2011-05-01

Focuses on the fundamental cartographic concepts used in planning, designing, and creating effective maps.
Lecture 2-3 hours, Laboratory 2 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course is required as part of the GIS Career Studies Certificate program at Tidewater Community College. It is essential that GIS students/professionals know how to create maps from their GIS data collection.

GIS 205 - GIS 3-Dimensional Analysis

Course Description

Effective: 2021-08-01

Introduces GIS 3D (three-dimensional) concepts and practices with a concentration on displaying, creating and analyzing spatial GIS data using 3D. Covers 3D shape files, 3D data formats such as Tins, DEMs, grids and controlling the perspective and scale of 3D data through rotating, panning and zooming.
Lecture 2-3 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4-5 hours per week.

GIS 208 - Introductory Mapping and Geographic Information Science

Course Description

Effective: 2015-05-01

Introduces the field of geographic information science, concepts of projections, coordinate systems, scale and direction.Acquires and maps digital spatial data. Introduces earth images and remote sensing data. Provides the fundamental skills, background concepts, and software exposure to mapping and geographic information science.
Lecture 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

Introduce students to maps and mapping as well as to expose them to geographic information systems software. Expose students to the dynamics of visualizing spatial data from numerous disciplines (e.g. business, health, science).

GIS 210 - Understanding Geographic Data

Course Description

Provides the student an introduction to geographic data and the principles behind their construction. Introduces the concepts for measuring locations and characteristics of entities in the real world. Exposes the student to the limitations and common characteristics of geographic data.

GIS 255 - Exploring Our Earth: Introduction to Remote Sensing

Course Description

Effective: 2014-08-01

Introduces material to understand the fundamental physical and mathematical principles and techniques of Remote Sensing. Introduces how each part of the electromagnetic spectrum is used to gather data about Earth. Describes limitations imposed by satellites, aircraft, and sensors. Surveys various methods to access and apply Earth observation/Remote Sensing data. Teaches students to use Remote Sensing software to process and manipulate Landsat, SPOT, photographic, and other imagery in a hands-on approach to Remote Sensing analysis.
3 - 4 Credits. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 - 4 hours. Total 4 - 6 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course is designed to meet the needs of students seeking to fulfill the Remote Sensing skills and competencies identified by the U.S. Department of Labor in the Geospatial Technology Competency Model. The course will prepare students for entry-level geospatial positions, as well as continued undergraduate or graduate-level geospatial studies.
