SUR 140 - Surgical Care I

Course Description

Introduces concepts of the surgical process including preparing the patient for surgery, transporting, positioning, and special preparation procedures of the surgical patient. Presents diagnostic and assessment procedures of the surgical patient including the importance of safety. Discusses the basic principles of aseptic technique.
Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

Introduces the concepts of preparing the patient for surgery. Discusses proper techniques in positioning and transporting patients for specific surgical procedures. Provides an opportunity to develop the necessary knowledge and skills needed to perform as an entry-level surgical technologist in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite: Admission to the Surgical Technology Program or permission of instructor. Corequisite: SUR 145
