ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD GEOLOGY OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY REGION, CALIFORNIA. Spring break field course: Weekly meetings on Zoom on Tuesdays from 6pm-7pm. Trip: March 7-15, 2026. The San Francisco Bay region is host to a wealth of extraordinary outcrops that tell the story of Mesozoic subduction and modern movement along the San Andreas and Hayward Faults. The high relief topography makes for high landslide potential. Students will explore this ?natural laboratory? of environmental geology to journey back in time, deep into the Earth, and forward to the hazards of the future. A course fee of $2000 covers the cost of airfare, ground transportation, food, and lodging. Course fee assistance may be available. Tuition costs are not included in the course fee. All students will be expected to be able to hike several miles over rough, rocky terrain at high elevation in order to accomplish course objectives. Field temperatures will range between 0 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit; the region is known to be foggy and rainy in March. Enrollment is by permission of instructor only. For more details or questions, please contact the lead instructor at cbentley@pvcc.edu or (434) 961-5472.
