Note: GOL 135 (H01) Geology of Shenandoah National Park, VA. One-day field trip Saturday, May 25, 2024, 8am-8pm. Rain date: Sunday, May 26, 2024. Important pre-trip logistical information and preparatory videos & readings will be shared online via Canvas. This field trip will examine the geology of the Shenandoah National Park in VA from the granites underlying Old Rag to the lava floods of the Catoctin Formation and include an overview of the tectonic setting of the Park including the formation of the Appalachians, an event that completed the assembly of the supercontinent Pangea. Students will be evaluated with a field trip report which will be completed after the trip itself. NOTE: This trip involves moderately strenuous hiking on forest trails. Meet in Lot 2 (next on the traffic circle) on the PVCC main campus at 8:00 a.m.; Return by 8:00 p.m. Transport will be in PVCC van + student carpools, organized on site. Note: GOL 135 (H03) Geology of Augusta County, VA. One-day field trip Saturday, June 8, 2024, 8am-7pm. Rain date: Sunday, June 9, 2024. Important pre-trip logistical information and preparatory videos & readings will be shared online via Canvas. This field trip will examine the exemplary geology of Augusta County, emphasizing sedimentology and stratigraphy, deformational structure related to Applachian mountain-building, and modern weathering generating karst topography (the trip includes a visit to Grand Caverns). Students will be evaluated with a field trip report which will be completed after the trip itself. NOTE: This trip involves moderately strenuous hiking on forest trails. Meet in Lot 2 (next on the traffic circle) on the PVCC main campus at 8:00 a.m.; Return by 7:00 p.m. Transport will be in PVCC van + student carpools, organized on site. Students will be evaluated with a field trip report which will be completed after the trip itself. NOTE: This trip involves moderately strenuous hiking on forest trails.
