Major: Career Studies Certificate in Ship Drafting and Design at Virginia Peninsula Community College

The Career Studies Certificate in Career Studies Certificate in Ship Drafting and Design is part of the CAD/CADD Drafting and/or Design Technology/Technician program at Virginia Peninsula Community College

The Ship Drafting and Design Career Studies Certificate includes training in computer aided software, ship drafting and design, ship nomenclature, and ship engineering processes. Upon successful completion of the program students may transfer their earned credits to the AAS in Computer Aided Drafting and/or Old Dominion University?s Digital Shipbuilding Certificate program.

Upon completion of the program students will be able to demonstrate basic CAD software concepts, and develop isometric and orthographic drawings, assembly drawings, and detail drawings. Students will have the ability to create 3D parametric models and produce a set of working drawings, and create production drawings related to machining, welding, forging, castings, sheet metal fabrication, piping, fasteners, CNC machining, and other manufacturing processes. Our students will be introduced to ship nomenclature, ship coordinate systems, ship components such as the rudder, anchor, bow, keel, propeller; they will create 3D models of ship components using CAD and create assembly drawings of various ship systems. They will be introduced to the latest advanced CAD software used in the shipbuilding industry and attend presentations from guest speakers about real world applications in the shipbuilding industry.
