Course Description

Teaches the basic techniques of dance styles. Includes skills such as self-expression, dance routines, dance forms, and basic choreography. Dance styles selected by semester. Topics may include pointe, hip-hop, tap, ballroom, etc. May be repeated under different dance styles. May be repeated for 4 credits with no duplicate genre

Laboratory 2 hours. Total 2 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

DAN 158 provides opportunities for students to actively participate in multiple dance genres. Students will continue to learn movement vocabulary specific to certain genres studied in the course.

Course Objectives

Critical Thinking

Identify and explain how elements of the dance genres (movement sequences, proper execution, and musicality) contribute to personal growth
Identify and execute specific technical and artistic corrections given throughout the course

Development and Significance of Dance Genres

Identify and explain the origin, history, and significance of the dance genres
Identify how learning and executing diverse dance genres may increase technical and artistic versatility

Communication

Effectively communicate dance terminology through written and oral communication

Building Blocks of Modern Technique

Improve knowledge and execution of dance technique
Demonstrate useful anatomical principles as they pertain to efficient dance movement, injury prevention, and artistic quality
Develop physical stamina, strength, and flexibility
Demonstrate intermediate rhythm structures and patterns
Expand spatial patterns

Artistry and Musicality

Improve coordination, articulation, and musicality
Expand artistic expression through the development of performance skills
