Course Description

Focuses on the creative and business-related aspects of producing a dance performance. Teaches basic skills such as lighting, costuming, music, and choreography.
Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

DAN 161 provides opportunities for students to excel in dance performance production and choreography.

Course Objectives

  • Critical Thinking
    • Improve ability to observe, analyze, and embody the required movement language of the dance with increasing speed and accuracy
    • Develop greater artistry in the treatment and/or interpretation of new movement material
  • Communication
    • Develop communication skills needed for marketing and outreach
    • Develop communication skills needed when directing a cast
  • Performance Planning Skills
    • Improve ability to contribute to the creative process as a performer by investing one's complete attention and intelligence in executing the work-in-progress, and/or through participating in movement development at the direction of the choreographer
    • Develop aesthetic and creative flexibility in the practical application of technique to a specific choreography
  • Technical Performance Elements
    • Identify and relate the components and essentials of a dance performance
    • Plan production elements such as audio, set, lighting, costuming, management, etc
  • Business Elements
    • Plan components of a dance performance such as marketing, outreach, budget, scheduling, and executing the program
