Course Description
Reviews selected French and Francophone literary and cultural expressions and equips students with the tools and methodologies to critically analyze a variety of genres. Identify and discuss themes, topics, structures, and literary techniques used to represent the shared experiences of French and Francophone cultures in the target language.
Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to introduce intermediate-to-advanced French language students to a basic background for understanding unique features of French literature and focus on the development of methods for critical analysis and discussion while continuing to develop fluency skills in French. This course is taught in the target language.

Prerequisite: FRE 202
Course Objectives

- Integrate cultural understanding with recurring themes and metaphors in literature common in the French and Francophone communities
- Identify and explain key cultural issues using evidence from French literature as a primary source.
- Distinguish forms of literature unique to the French and Francophone communities with attention to linguistic, literary and cultural detail

- Establish and present parallels between cultural themes within different literary genres
- Develop literary skills in French centered on analysis, interpretation and criticism with application of social contexts

- Establish and present parallels between literary forms found across language communities.
- Analyze authentic sources of literary texts and artistic forms of expression, such as films, literature, paintings, music, etc.
- Supplement literary texts with film adaptations or multimedia resources to enhance students' understanding and appreciation of literature
