History of American Cinema: This course will use a political economic approach to analyze the ways in which politics, economics, and technological innovation directly affect the abstract understanding of what American consumers consider "a good movie." To put it another way, this is the flip side of NOVA's CST 151 "Film Appreciation" course. Instead of examining the genius of revolutionary film makers, this course considers the ways in which zeitgeist and economics determine what is a "great movie" more than the aesthetic of the film itself. Contemporary Asian American Literature: This course focuses on works by living Asian American authors (Maxine Hong Kingston, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Chang-Rae Lee, Ken Liu, Ocean Vuong, Jhumpa Lahiri, etc.) who have forever shaped the American literary world. These works depict the changing world around us in one aspect or another, making them powerful tools for preserving the times. Some of these works are bestsellers, while others will go down in history as classics. We will access these works via formal online websites. This approach not only exposes us to varied literary genres, styles, issues but also provides affordable, accessible, fun education and, most importantly, the chance to examine our own lived experiences as they intersect with the literary ones and the personal ones of the authors.
