- ENG 225 - Reading Literature: Culture and Ideas
- Examines a set of literary texts linked by a particular theme, with inquiry into the historical, cultural, and/or social contexts of the texts and the theme. Emphasizes interpretive and critical analysis skills developed through close reading and intertextual study, as well as highlights an exploration of cultural ideas. Engages works of diverse genres, authors, and time periods. Specific themes will vary by section. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course.3 credits

| The focus of the course is Romance in literature and media, and we'll be reading several novels in this genre. Many will cross into over genres as well. Readings will include Jane Austen?s ?Pride & Prejudice?, Emily Bronte?s ?Wuthering Heights?, Charlaine Harris? ?Dead Until Dark?, Adam Silvera?s ?They Both Die at the End?, William Shakespeare?s ?Much Ado About Nothing?, William Goldman?s ?The Princess Bride?, and Alice Oseman?s ?Heartstopper?. We will also be watching several films and listening to different media as well. Options for viewing these will be discussed in class. Students should have access to reliable internet, webcams, and microphones to participate in the class. Attendance during Zoom sessions is required, and webcams must be turned on to verify attendance in the class. Hybrid class: this course has required attendance at specific class times in ZOOM sessions but also has extensive non-synchronous online instruction. | |||||||

| This course is a Zoom/Hybrid, which means we meet once a week on Zoom (Tuesday from 7:00-8:20). The focus of the course is Drama, and we'll be reading several plays, focusing on tragedy, comedy, and musicals. We will also be watching several stage or film productions of our readings and listening to different media as well. Options for viewing these will be discussed in class. Students should have access to reliable internet, webcams, and microphones to participate in the class. Webcams need to be turned on during class sessions. We are transitioning bookstores.
