- Examines a set of literary texts linked by a particular theme, with inquiry into the historical, cultural, and/or social contexts of the texts and the theme. Emphasizes interpretive and critical analysis skills developed through close reading and intertextual study, as well as highlights an exploration of cultural ideas. Engages works of diverse genres, authors, and time periods. Specific themes will vary by section. This is a UCGS transfer course.3 credits

| Hybrid class: this course requires attendance at specific class times but also includes extensive non-synchronous instruction. We are transitioning bookstores. Textbooks for Online Classes are available for purchase at our RCC Online Bookstore at https://rappahannock.textbookx.com/institutional/index.php The focus of the course is Fantasy in literature and media, and we'll be reading several novels in this genre. Readings will include J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit", Madeline Miller's "Song of Achilles", C.S. Lewis's "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", Rick Riordan's "The Red Pyramid", Lewis Carroll's ?Alice's Adventures in Wonderland?, and Ursula Le Guin's ?A Wizard of Earthsea ?. We will also be watching several films and listening to different media as well. Options for viewing these will be discussed in class. Students should have access to reliable internet, webcams, and microphones to participate in the class. Attendance during Zoom sessions is required. | |||||||
