ENG 225 - Reading Literature: Culture and Ideas
Examines a set of literary texts linked by a particular theme, with inquiry into the historical, cultural, and/or social contexts of the texts and the theme. Emphasizes interpretive and critical analysis skills developed through close reading and intertextual study, as well as highlights an exploration of cultural ideas. Engages works of diverse genres, authors, and time periods. Specific themes will vary by section. This is a UCGS transfer course.
Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
Prerequisites: ENG 112, ENG 113, or departmental approval.

The focus of the course is Science Fiction in literature and media, and we'll be reading several novels, short stories, and even a graphic novel in this genre. We will also be watching several films and listening to different media as well. Readings will include Frankenstein, War of the Worlds, Watchmen, Parable of the Sower, Ready Player One, and short stories from authors like Ray Bradbury and Ursula K. LeGuin. Also, students will be asked to view several films. Options for viewing these will be discussed in class. Students should have access to reliable internet to participate in the class.
